The assumption almost everyone makes about exercise is that it is great for the body. The more we exercise, the healthier we will be. This is not always true, especially when someone is exercising wrong. Certain types of exercise can be very detrimental on the body.

At 919Spine, we regularly see exercise related injuries. One of the most common exercises that lead to injuries is running. But, exercise and even running can be great for the body when done a certain way.

5 things to do when exercising in order to lower the chance of an injury is:

  1. Warm Up and Cool Down: Take 5 to 10 minutes to get started and warm up the body and muscles. At the end, do the same thing. Give the body about 5 to 10 minutes of slower exercise.

  2. Visit a Chiropractor: A regular visit to the chiropractor is a great thing for anyone who is exercising, but for a runner, it is necessary. A chiropractor will be able to identify injuries as they are beginning and help correct the issues leading towards the injury. They will also know your body and be able to give direction on how to best exercise.

  3. Listen to the Body: If any muscles are feeling achy, it is probably time to slow down. If there is an overall fatigue or pain, it’s time to slow down.

  4. Drink Water: The muscles need water, or fluids depending on how much exercise was done. If muscles do not get proper hydration, they will not work the way they should which could lead to an injury.

  5. Watch the Weather: Many Raleigh runners love to run outside, even during our hot and humid summers. This can lead to dehydration in the body. If exercising outside is a must, watch for symptoms of dehydration. Some of those are headaches, dizziness, faintness and cramps.

Exercising regularly is a great thing! If exercise is a regular part of the schedule, then it’s time to see a chiropractor on a regular basis too. To learn more about 919Spine and to set up your first appointment, contact us now!
